Encountering flooded roads

Posted on by CCPD

With continued heavy rain in the forecast through the weekend, drivers should use caution with any roadway experiencing any level of flooding. If you encounter floodwaters on a road while driving:

  • First and foremost, look for an alternative route rather than taking the risk of driving through standing water on a roadway.
  • Never drive around a barricade that has been put in place to block traffic on a flooded roadway.
  • If you do not have an alternative route, remember that even six inches of water on a road can be enough to stall your car if water gets into the exhaust or engine.
  • If you have to drive through standing water, proceed slowly and try to drive in the middle where the water should be at its shallowest. Be sure to test your brakes once past the water to make sure they are working.
  • Never drive through water if you observe downed power lines nearby.
